Honoring Juneteenth: A Personal Reflection

Juneteenth is more than a historical date it's a celebration of freedom, resilience, and the ongoing journey toward equality. As a Black woman and the owner of Joyce's Baskets, I hold this holiday close to my heart. It's a reminder of how far we've come and the work still ahead. This year, I had the honor of attending a powerful Juneteenth Luncheon hosted by the North Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce, where Black excellence and community leadership were front and center.

Celebrating with the NMB Chamber of Commerce

The North Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce made a powerful and heartfelt decision this year to honor Juneteenth with a luncheon dedicated to celebrating Black leaders in the community. The event was both professional and deeply personal, highlighting stories of perseverance, leadership, and unity. As an attendee, I was moved by the thoughtfulness behind every detail. From the warm welcome to the inspiring program, it was clear this was more than just a luncheon it was a tribute to Black excellence. The Chamber's choice to honor Juneteenth in this way reflected a commitment to compassion, community, and progress.

Guest Speaker Spotlights

One of the most memorable parts of the luncheon was hearing from three exceptional guest speakers who shared their journeys, challenges, and triumphs as leaders in their fields.

Mrs. Bea Hines

A true trailblazer, Mrs. Bea Hines became the first African-American female reporter at the Miami Herald in 1970. A Pulitzer Prize nominee, author, and professional speaker, her words were filled with grace, wisdom, and deep reflection. Her presence reminded us of the power of perseverance, storytelling, and how one voice can open doors for so many others.

Dr. Stephen Wigley IV

A respected podiatric surgeon and the CEO of Wigley Feet, Dr. Wigley shared his experiences not only as a medical professional but also as a business leader. His story reflected a balance of innovation, discipline, and service a true example of Black excellence in healthcare and entrepreneurship.

Attorney Beatrice Cazeau, Esq.

As Managing Attorney at Cazeau & Associates, PLLC, Attorney Cazeau brought strength, intellect, and inspiration. Her work in the legal field and her commitment to justice were evident in every word she spoke, leaving a lasting impression on everyone in the room.

My Perspective as a Black Business Owner

Attending this Juneteenth luncheon meant so much to me not only as a member of the community, but as a Black woman entrepreneur and the owner of Joyce's Baskets. I came with the hope of hearing stories that would uplift and inspire, and I left with far more than that I left with a renewed sense of pride, unity, and hope. Each speaker's journey spoke to a different part of me as a businesswoman, a creative, and someone committed to making a positive impact. I felt so many emotions listening to all three speakers, but Mrs. Bea Hines touched me the most. I grew up in the same Black community she was a part of, and I remember hearing about her strength, her voice, and the barriers she was breaking. Seeing her speak in person, after all these years, was incredibly moving it felt like coming home to a living legend. This event reminded me that when we come together in love and compassion, we create bridges bridges that connect generations, inspire change, and make the world a better place.

Closing Reflection & Thank You

I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to the North Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce for organizing such a meaningful Juneteenth celebration. Special appreciation goes to Evan Piper, President of the NMB Chamber, Leslie Loewenthal, Executive Director, and the entire Chamber staff who worked to make this event possible. Your commitment to honoring Black history, leadership, and unity speaks volumes. This luncheon was more than a gathering it was a moment of connection, acknowledgment, and celebration. It reminded me that our stories matter, our voices are strong, and when we come together with compassion, we build a future we can all be proud of.
